Basic Positioning and Alignment
One of the most important considerations for fitness professionals who want to incorporate foam rollers into their training programs is monitoring proper basic body positioning and alignment on the device. To execute movements safely and effectively, clients need to be taught how to use the rollers in different positions—supine, standing, seated and on all fours (quadruped).
Regardless of which position is used, the lumbar spine should remain in the neutral position.
Supine Position. While you are on a foam roller, the back should not be arched off the foam surface (in an anterior pelvic tilt) but instead should remain in contact with the foam roller throughout the movement. You need to be careful, however, to avoid the other extreme (a posterior pelvic tilt), indicated by a rounding of the lumbar spine and a forceful pressing of the spine into the roller. The roller should remain in line with the midline of the torso in a longitudinal fashion and aligned evenly on both sides of the body. Your head should be resting comfortably on the roller in neutral alignment.

Standing Position: When your standing on a foam roller, the arches of the feet should be planted on the center of the roller, with the body’s center of gravity aligned over the feet; the spine should be in neutral alignment. To stay balanced, you should maintain a slight, soft bend in the knees. For safety reasons, it’s best to start clients out in the most stable position, with the flat side of the half round roller face down. For more support, they can hold onto a nearby wall or counter. After you have demonstrated suitable control, you can progress to more unstable positions, working with the round side of the half round roller face down and finally graduating to a round roller. You should always be barefoot when standing on the round surface of a foam roller because wearing shoes decreases proprioceptive feedback, making movements more dangerous.

Seated Position: All seated exercises on the roller should begin with the trunk upright and elongated. In the seated position, the weight should be balanced equally on the “sit bones,” with the spine in neutral; the feet should be planted on the floor in front of the body, hip width apart.

Quadruped Position: When your performing exercises on all fours, one knee should be placed on the surface of the foam roller, directly under the hip; the hand on the opposite side of the body is positioned underneath the shoulder. The spine should be in a neutral position, and the torso should remain parallel to the floor during all limb movements.

Core Stabilization: Because foam rollers are inherently unstable, they are great tools for improving core stability. They force the multifidus and transversus abdominis muscles to contract in order to stabilize the spine (King 2004). The instability of foam rollers can teach clients sensory perception and challenge their body awareness through fine-tuned movements. These devices also provide immediate sensory feedback when clients are unable to maintain a stable core when moving their limbs. However, to avoid compensatory recruitment of other muscle groups, it is essential to maintain a neutral spine position when performing any stability exercise on a roller.

The following three exercises can be used safely and effectively in personal training sessions and group fitness classes.
1.
Lie supine on half round roller (either side down) or full round roller. Keep roller in line with midline of torso, feet flat on floor and knees bent. Hold arms at side for balance or fold them on torso for greater challenge. Contract abdominal muscles and alternately lift right and left foot 6–12 inches off floor in marching fashion without compromising neutral position of lumbar spine.
2. Repeat 2–3 sets of 10–15 repetitions per side.
Strength Training
Using a foam roller to perform strength training exercises can enhance isokinetic strength and improve a client’s ability to balance and react to small adjustments in any dynamic environment. Athletes in particular will see a boost in core strength when performing any contact, collision or extreme sport that requires a superior level of balance and control. However, clients of all ages and abilities can improve their ability to function and perform the activities of daily living, while also reducing their risk of injuries.
Balance Training: Because the ability to balance tends to decline as we age, the foam roller is especially useful for working with the senior population and those with injuries.
On a Roll : Foam rollers enable clients to be challenged in multiple fitness dimensions, whether in a group setting or one-on-one. These fun devices offer a cost-effective way to implement new and exciting training techniques in your sessions. Useful for a wide spectrum of clients, foam rollers can improve core stability, strength, balance and flexibility. Roll out some of these exercises in your classes or training sessions tomorrow, and start your own fitness revolution!
I bet you anything you will be picking at least one or two items! I would love to review this site again! I found two other items that look to be amazing! Keep a eye out for more news and reviews!~
I hope you all have a great weekend and see you next time!

Figs and Fridays

Wow...today is FRIDAY already?!? How did this happen? I am not complaining but I will say, this week flew by. I have been running non-stop this week and because I have been everywhere doing everything my eats have been everywhere. They havent been bad, just different! Changing things up is always welcomed in my life. I am a creature of habit and if I am not forced to do something different I will stay on the same path, forever. How do you take to change? Do you have a set schedule? Like to do the same things day in and day out? Well, this month has made me think twice about planning out every moment and because of this, I am having some much needed fun! I always try my best to shake things up but it is so much easier when someone else does it for ya!

With this being said, lets move on to a few things that have shook me in the best way possible! I have a few favorite treats and one of them are:

Figs
Although dried figs are available throughout the year, there is nothing like the unique taste and texture of fresh figs. They are lusciously sweet with a texture that combines the chewiness of their flesh, the smoothness of their skin, and the crunchiness of their seeds. California figs are available from June through September; some European varieties are available through autumn.

Figs grow on the Ficus tree (Ficus carica), which is a member of the Mulberry family. They are unique in that they have an opening, called the "ostiole" or "eye," which is not connected to the tree, but which helps the fruit's development by increasing its communication with the environment. Figs range dramatically in color and subtly in texture depending upon the variety. The majority of figs are dried, either by exposure to sunlight or through an artificial process, creating a sweet and nutritious dried fruit that can be enjoyed throughout the year.

This chart graphically details the %DV that a serving of Figs provides for each of the nutrients of which it is a good, very good, or excellent source according to our Food Rating System. Additional information about the amount of these nutrients provided by Figs can be found in the Food Rating System Chart. A link that takes you to the In-Depth Nutritional Profile for Figs, featuring information over 80 nutrients, can be found under the Food Rating System Chart.

Help Lower High Blood Pressure
Figs are a good source of potassium, a mineral that helps to control blood pressure. Since many people not only do not eat enough fruits and vegetables, but do consume high amounts of sodium as salt is frequently added to processed foods, they may be deficient in potassium. Low intake of potassium-rich foods, especially when coupled with a high intake of sodium, can lead to hypertension. In the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) study, one group ate servings of fruits and vegetables in place of snacks and sweets, and also ate low-fat dairy food. This diet delivered more potassium, magnesium and calcium. Another group ate a "usual" diet low in fruits and vegetables with a fat content like that found in the average American Diet. After eight weeks, the group that ate the enhanced diet lowered their blood pressure by an average of 5.5 points (systolic) over 3.0 points (diastolic).

A Sweet Way to Lose Weight

Figs are a good source of dietary fiber. Fiber and fiber-rich foods may have a positive effect on weight management. In one study, women who increased their fiber intake with supplements significantly decreased their energy intake, yet their hunger and satiety scores did not change. Figs, like other high fiber foods, may be helpful in a weight management program.

Fruit and Cereal Fiber Protective against Postmenopausal Breast Cancer

Results of a prospective study involving 51,823 postmenopausal women for an average of 8.3 years showed a 34% reduction in breast cancer risk for those consuming the most fruit fiber compared to those consuming the least. In addition, in the subgroup of women who had ever used hormone replacement, those consuming the most fiber, especially cereal fiber, had a 50% reduction in their risk of breast cancer compared to those consuming the least. Int J Cancer. 2008 Jan 15;122(2):403-12.

Fruits richest in fiber include apples, dates, figs, pears and prunes. When choosing a high fiber cereal, look for whole grain cereals as they supply the most bran (a mere 1/3rd cup of bran contains about 14 grams of fiber).

An Insulin-Lowering Leaf in Diabetes
You probably do not think about the leaves of the fig tree as one of fig's edible parts. But in some cultures, fig leaves are a common part of the menu, and for good reason. The leaves of the fig have repeatedly been shown to have antidiabetic properties and can actually reduce the amount of insulin needed by persons with diabetes who require insulin injections. In one study, a liquid extract made from fig leaves was simply added to the breakfast of insulin-dependent diabetic subjects in order to produce this insulin-lowering effect.

Bone Density Promoter
Figs are a fruit source of calcium (79 milligrams in an 8 oz-wt serving), a mineral that has many functions including promoting bone density. Additionally, figs' potassium may also counteract the increased urinary calcium loss caused by the high-salt diets typical of most Americans, thus helping to further prevent bones from thinning out at a fast rate.

Cardiovascular Effects

In animal studies, fig leaves have been shown to lower levels of triglycerides (a form in which fats circulate in the bloodstream), while in in vitro studies, fig leaves inhibited the growth of certain types of cancer cells. Researchers have not yet determined exactly which substances in fig leaves are responsible for these remarkable healing effects.

Besides their potassium and fiber content, figs emerged from our food ranking system as a good source of the trace mineral manganese.

Protection against Macular Degeneration

Your mother may have told you carrots would keep your eyes bright as a child, but as an adult, it looks like fruit is even more important for keeping your sight. Data reported in a study published in the Archives of Ophthalmology indicates that eating 3 or more servings of fruit per day may lower your risk of age-related macular degeneration (ARMD), the primary cause of vision loss in older adults, by 36%, compared to persons who consume less than 1.5 servings of fruit daily.

In this study, which involved over 100,00 women and men, researchers evaluated the effect of study participants' consumption of fruits; vegetables; the antioxidant vitamins A, C, and E; and carotenoids on the development of early ARMD or neovascular ARMD, a more severe form of the illness associated with vision loss. Food intake information was collected periodically for up to 18 years for women and 12 years for men.

While, surprisingly, intakes of vegetables, antioxidant vitamins and carotenoids were not strongly related to incidence of either form of ARMD, fruit intake was definitely protective against the severe form of this vision-destroying disease. Three servings of fruit may sound like a lot to eat each day, but by simply tossing a banana into your morning smoothie or slicing it over your cereal, topping off a cup of yogurt or green salad with a couple of diced figs, and snacking on an apple, plum, nectarine or pear, you've reached this goal.

Description
Figs are not only the main ingredient in a very popular cookie, the fig bar, but are a culinary delicacy par excellence. Part of the wonder of the fig comes from its unique taste and texture. Figs are lusciously sweet and feature a complex texture that combines the chewiness of their flesh, the smoothness of their skin, and the crunchiness of their seeds. In addition, since fresh figs are so delicate and perishable, some of their mystique comes from their relative rarity. Because of this, the majority of figs are dried, either by exposure to sunlight or through an artificial process, creating a sweet and nutritious dried fruit that can be enjoyed throughout the year.

Figs grow on the Ficus tree (Ficus carica), which is a member of the Mulberry family. They are unique in that they have an opening, called the "ostiole" or "eye," which is not connected to the tree, but which helps the fruit's development, aiding it in communication with the environment.

Figs range dramatically in color and subtly in texture depending upon the variety, of which there are more than one hundred and fifty. Some of the most popular varieties are:

Black Mission: blackish-purple skin and pink colored flesh
Kadota: green skin and purplish flesh
Calimyrna: greenish-yellow skin and amber flesh
Brown Turkey: purple skin and red flesh
Adriatic: the variety most often used to make fig bars, which has a light green skin and pink-tan flesh .

History
Figs can trace their history back to the earliest of times with mentions in the Bible and other ancient writings. They are thought to have been first cultivated in Egypt. They spread to ancient Crete and then subsequently, around the 9th century BC, to ancient Greece, where they became a staple foodstuff in the traditional diet. Figs were held in such esteem by the Greeks that they created laws forbidding the export of the best quality figs. Figs were also revered in ancient Rome where they were thought of as a sacred fruit. According to Roman myth, the wolf that nurtured the twin founders of Rome, Romulus and Remus, rested under a fig tree. During this period of history, at least 29 varieties of figs were already known.

Figs were later introduced to other regions of the Mediterranean by ancient conquerors and then brought to the Western Hemisphere by the Spaniards in the early 16th century. In the late 19th century, when Spanish missionaries established the mission in San Diego, California, they also planted fig trees. These figs turned out to be inferior in quality to those that were imported from Europe, and it wasn't until the development of further cultivation techniques in the early 20th century that California began focused cultivation and processing of figs. Today, California remains one of the largest producers of figs in addition to Turkey, Greece, Portugal and Spain.

How to Select and Store
Since fresh figs are one of the most perishable fruits, they should be purchased only a day or two in advance of when you are planning on eating them. Look for figs that have a rich, deep color and are plump and tender, but not mushy. They should have firm stems and be free of bruises. Smelling figs can also give you clues into their freshness and taste. They should have a mildly sweet fragrance and should not smell sour, which is an indication that they may be spoiled.

For the most antioxidants, choose fully ripened figs:

Research conducted at the University of Innsbruck in Austria suggests that as fruits fully ripen, almost to the point of spoilage, their antioxidant levels actually increase.

Key to the process is the change in color that occurs as fruits ripen, a similar process to that seen in the fall when leaves turn from green to red to yellow to brown- a color change caused by the breakdown and disappearance of chlorophyll, which gives leaves and fruits their green color.

Until now, no one really knew what happened to chlorophyll during this process, but lead researcher, Bernard Kräutler, and his team, working together with botanists over the past several years, has identified the first decomposition products in leaves: colorless, polar NCCs (nonfluorescing chlorophyll catabolytes), that contain four pyrrole rings - like chlorophyll and heme.

After examining apples and pears, the scientists discovered that NCCs replace the chlorophyll not only in the leaves of fruit trees, but in their very ripe fruits, especially in the peel and flesh immediately below it.

"When chlorophyll is released from its protein complexes in the decomposition process, it has a phototoxic effect: when irradiated with light, it absorbs energy and can transfer it to other substances. For example, it can transform oxygen into a highly reactive, destructive form," report the researchers. However, NCCs have just the opposite effect. Extremely powerful antioxidants, they play an important protective role for the plant, and when consumed as part of the human diet, NCCs deliver the same potent antioxidant protection within our bodies. . Angew Chem Int Ed Engl. 2007 Nov 19;46(45):8699-8702.

California figs are available from June through September with the exact timing varying with the variety. Some European figs are often available throughout autumn. When purchasing dried figs, make sure that they are still relatively soft, free of mold, and have a mellow, pleasant smell. Dried figs are available throughout the year.

Ripe figs should be kept in the refrigerator where they will stay fresh for about two days. Since they have a delicate nature and can easily bruise, you should store them either arranged on a paper towel-lined plate or shallow container. They should be covered or wrapped in order to ensure that they do not dry out, get crushed or pick up odors from neighboring foods. If you have purchased slightly under-ripe figs, you should keep them on a plate, at room temperature, away from direct sunlight. Dried figs will stay fresh for several months and can either be kept in a cool, dark place or stored in the refrigerator. They should be well wrapped so that they are not over exposed to air that may cause them to become hard or dry.

Tips for Preparing Figs
Before eating or cooking figs, wash them under cool water and then gently remove the stem. Gently wipe dry.

Dried figs can simply be eaten, used in a recipe as is, or simmered for several minutes in water or fruit juice to make them plumper and juicier.

A Few Quick Serving Ideas:
When preparing oatmeal or any other whole grain breakfast porridge, add some dried or fresh figs.

Poach figs in juice or red wine and serve with yogurt or frozen desserts.

Add quartered figs to a salad of fennel, arugula and shaved Parmesan cheese.

Fresh figs stuffed with goat cheese and chopped almonds can be served as hors d'oeuvres or desserts.

Individual Concerns

Figs and Oxalates
Figs are among a small number of foods that contain measurable amounts of oxalates, naturally-occurring substances found in plants, animals, and human beings. When oxalates become too concentrated in body fluids, they can crystallize and cause health problems. For this reason, individuals with already existing and untreated kidney or gallbladder problems may want to avoid eating figs.

Laboratory studies have shown that oxalates may also interfere with absorption of calcium from the body. Yet, in every peer-reviewed research study we've seen, the ability of oxalates to lower calcium absorption is relatively small and definitely does not outweigh the ability of oxalate-containing foods to contribute calcium to the meal plan. If your digestive tract is healthy, and you do a good job of chewing and relaxing while you enjoy your meals, you will get significant benefits - including absorption of calcium - from calcium-rich foods plant foods that also contain oxalic acid. Ordinarily, a healthcare practitioner would not discourage a person focused on ensuring that they are meeting their calcium requirements from eating these nutrient-rich foods because of their oxalate content. For more on this subject, please see "Can you tell me what oxalates are and in which foods they can be found?"

Dried Figs and Sulfites
Commercially grown dried figs may be treated with sulfur dioxide gas during processing. They may also be treated with sulfites to extend their shelf life.

Sulfur-containing compounds are often added to dried foods like figs as preservatives to help prevent oxidation and bleaching of colors. The sulfites used to help preserve dried figs cause adverse reactions in an estimated one out of every 100 people, who turn out to be sulfite sensitive.

Sulfite reactions can be particularly acute in people who suffer from asthma. The Federal Food and Drug Administration estimates that 5 percent of asthmatics may suffer a reaction when exposed to sulfites.

Foods that are classified as "organic" do not contain sulfites since federal regulations prohibit the use of these preservatives in organically grown or produced foods. Therefore, concern about sulfite exposure is yet another reason to purchase organic foods.

Here is what I did with some freshly picked figs. I have to say, figs are like little jewels to me and I could eat them all year long. When Shelly walked into work with a bag of the best figs I have ever tasted in my life. I was thrilled. Figs and goat cheese is pretty much heaven on earth to me...I decided to make a simple but delicious salad!

Fig Spinach Salad with Warm Bacon Dressing.

Ingredients:
3 to 4 cups washed baby spinach leaves
12 to 18 fresh figs, washed
1/4 cup thinly sliced red onion
crumbled blue cheese, about 3 to 4 tablespoons
pecans, halves or coarsely chopped, about 2 tablespoons
Dressing
3 slices bacon, cooked and crumbled
1/3 cup granulated sugar
1/3 cup red wine vinegar or red wine vinegar with pomegranate
1 tablespoon water
2 teaspoons cornstarch
dash salt
Preparation:
Arrange the spinach leaves on four salad plates. Slice figs in half and arrange on the spinach. Sprinkle thinly sliced red onion over the spinach, then sprinkle with the cheese and pecans. Combine dressing ingredients in a saucepan and bring to a simmer. Remove from heat and let cool slightly.
Spoon some of the warm dressing over the salads, making sure each salad gets some of the bacon pieces. Serves 4.

I hope you all are not completely overwhelmed with my fig talk this morning. It was on my mind and my taste buds so I thought I would share.

Come back Monday for a wonderful review!

Soda I LOVE.

Gooooood Morning! What a great day it really is! Hump day is here again and now that I know I am over the major hump in the week, it is all down hill from here.

I am so happy this morning I could burst. I have had some great luck this week so far and I am so very glad. I needed it! I got a package from a company that I have reviewed before and I must say...free soda was welcomed! This is a product that I tried and have been back to the store time and time again to buy. I even begged my Kroger to carry it! I was shocked to see it on the self just a few days later! What am I talking about? Well...I will show you!

ZEVIA is the first all natural zero calorie soda. With only pure ingredients, ZEVIA contains none of the chemically processed artificial sugar substitutes, artificial flavors or artificial colors found in other diet sodas. ZEVIA is all-natural, has zero calories, zero net carbs, zero fat, and little or no sodium (depending on flavor).
All seven delicious ZEVIA varieties - ZEVIA Natural Cola (my personal favorite), ZEVIA Natural Orange, ZEVIA Natural Twist, ZEVIA Natural Root Beer, ZEVIA Natural Black Cherry, and ZEVIA Natural Ginger Ale - are healthier and taste better than any other diet soda.

Zevia stevia soda is Nature's Answer To Diet Soda. We have taken great care and spared no expense to make sure that all seven Zevia stevia soda varieties contain only pure, natural ingredients.
Zevia Natural Diet Sodas contain the natural ingredients discussed below.

Ingredients Include:
- Stevia
- Erythritol
- Natural Caramel
- Natural Tartaric Acid
- Citric Acid
- Kola Nut Extract
- Natural Caffeine
- Annatto
- Ginger Root

The break down:

Stevia:
Stevia is a natural herb native to South and Central America. For centuries, native Americans of Paraguay and Brazil called it "sweet leaf" and used it to sweeten native foods. Stevia is used as a food additive in China, Japan, all of South America and in the United States. The extract from the stevia leaf has no calories, no effect on blood sugar levels, and is hundreds of times sweeter than sugar. Stevia sweetens all seven Zevia Natural Diet Soda flavors.

Erythritol:
Erythritol is a natural sugar alcohol found in fruits and vegetables, has no calories, and has no effect on blood sugar levels. Erythritol does not promote tooth decay. Erythritol is used in all seven Zevia Natural Diet Soda flavors.

Natural Caramel:
Zevia Natural Cola and Zevia Natural Ginger Ale stevia sodas are colored with natural caramel.
Natural Tartaric Acid:
Tartaric acid occurs naturally in many plants, particularly grapes, bananas, and tamarinds, and is also found in wine. Most colas use cheap, harmful phosphoric acid for flavor. Phosphoric acid is used in fertilizers and detergents. It erodes tooth enamel and has been linked to depletion of calcium, a contributing factor in osteoporosis. Safe, natural tartaric acid enhances the zesty, tangy flavor of Zevia® Natural Cola stevia soda.
Citric Acid:
Citric acid is naturally concentrated in oranges, grapefruit, pineapple, lemons and limes. This natural citric acid flavors all seven Zevia Natural Diet Soda flavors.

Kola Nut Extract:
The kola nut is from a tree native to Central and Western Africa. The kola nut contains naturally occurring caffeine, as well as theobromine, a stimulating ingredient also found in chocolate and green tea. Natural kola nut extract provides the classic cola flavor in Zevia Natural Cola stevia soda.

Natural Caffeine:
Most diet sodas use artificially produced caffeine. The natural caffeine in Zevia Natural Cola stevia soda comes from coffee, tea, and the kola nut. All five other delicious Zevia Natural Diet Soda flavors are caffeine free.

Annatto:
Zevia Natural Orange stevia soda is colored with annatto, from the achiote tree. When we were developing Zevia Natural Orange, we were told that orange color had to be artificial. But, because Zevia was to be the first truly all natural zero calorie soda, we refused to accept anything artificial for the Zevia brand. After searching, we found annatto, which is all natural and a beautiful orange.

Ginger Root:
Zevia Natural Root Beer and Zevia Natural Ginger Ale stevia sodas contain extract of ginger root. This ancient and tasty ingredient has been used by people around the world to alleviate everything from morning sickness to arthritis pain.

I hate fake sugars like Splenda, Equal and Sweeten low. In fact I will not consume it at all. This makes my food and drink choices hard. I was absolutely amazed how many products have one of these (especially Splenda) in it. That is why I have been for over 3 years now on a "clean" diet. No fake anything. Nothing that I cant pronounce goes in my body. No more than 5 ingredients and I do my darnest not to eat things pre-packaged. This soda is something that I can feel good about drinking! I have to say, I almost felt guilty as I took my first sip! You may be asking yourself:

What is Stevia?
Stevia is an herb native to South and Central America, and grown now in Asia. For centuries, native Americans of Paraguay and Brazil called it "sweet leaf" and used it to sweeten foods. Stevia helps with dental hygiene, recent studies found it has antioxidant properties and other health benefits, and it contains no calories. Click here to learn more about stevia.

Why do the Zevia Nutrition Facts Panels show carbohydrates?
Erythritol theoretically has carbohydrates. However, the body does not process them, which is why Zevia still has zero calories. Erythritiol is excreted through the urine unchanged from its original form. Of course, we disclose the carbohydrates, but we say Zevia has zero "net carbs" because the carbohydrates have no effect on blood sugar, do not assist in weight gain, and do not provide any energy like other carbs which also have calories.

Oprah'sMagazine is featuring Zevia in their September edition of
O-List.

Oprah says,
"You may try this Stevia-sweetened soda because it contains no
calories, no sugar, no aftertaste, no artificial anything, but you'll

stick with it because it's delicious."

I love Oprah and glad that she is getting the good word out about this wonderful soda collection! I too give Zevia a 10! It is amazing and I will continue to drink it! I have made floats with my zevia, mixed drinks and drank it alone! All in all a wonderful product. I have tasted all flavors and ALL of them rock! My favorites are the Cola, Ginger Ale and Dr. Zevia. I am so happy to tell you all that you too can have a chance to try out this great product!

The folks at Zevia were kind enough to offer a give-a-way! They are offering one mixed six pack to one winner. All you have to do is one of three! If you do all three you have three chances to win!

1: Leave me a comment telling me which flavor is your favorite or which one you would like to try most.
2: link my blog to your blog, facebook or tweet about the give-a-way.
or
3: send me a picture with you and Zevia!

Alright...get to it! I will announce the winner on Monday August 30! I hope you win!

See you tomorrow!

Drink up!

Pre-going out eats.

Good Morning! I know that it is Saturday and all but I just had to post my pre-going out meal. I always try my best to eat a good meal before I go out. When you know that you are going to be drinking it is wise to do so. I decided at the last minute that I wanted stuffed chicken. Because I only had about a hour before I needed to shower and get ready I had to make due with ingredients that I had already on the kitchen. This is a twist to the ever so traditional stuffed chicken. Not bad if I do say so myself!

Butter bean and apricot-stuffed chicken

Ingredients
1/2 cup chopped feta (about 75g)
2 tablespoons chopped hazelnuts
3 tablespoons diced dried apricots
1 quantity herby onion and butter bean mix*
4 free-range chicken breasts, skin removed
sea salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions
Step 1 Preheat oven to 190ÂşC. Put feta into a bowl with hazelnuts, apricots and herby onion and butter bean mix. Mash together with a fork.

Step 2 Cut each chicken breast in half horizontally without cutting all the way through. Open chicken breast and season with salt and pepper. Spread stuffing across one half of each breast. Close each piece to encase filling.

Step 3 Put on an oven tray and roast for 20-25 minutes until golden and cooked through. Serve with steamed vegetables and potatoes.

*Herby onion and butter bean mix
Heat 1 tablespoon olive oil in a large pan. Add 1 sliced red onion, 2 tablespoons pumpkin seeds and 1 tablespoon chopped thyme. Cook gently for 15 minutes, stirring, until onion is soft. Add 400g can butter beans (drained and rinsed). Mix well and season with salt and pepper.

Recipe Information
Portions: 4

Time to make: 35 minutes

Total cost of all ingredients: $29.36 / $7.34 per serve

Gluten-free (or can be made gluten-free*)

This was perfect! It was light enough to where I didn't feel over stuffed but heavy enough that I was able to have a few drinks and not feel too woozy. I just wanted to stop by and say hello!

I know I am going to get a million e-mails asking about this out adventure...you will have to wait and see if there is more of these in the future :)

Craving Friday.

Hey there! How is this week treating you? My Monday was a crazy one but at least I have it behind me now and I can move on. Is there a day of the week that is your favorite? Mine is Saturday or Sunday for sure. I like so many, dislike Mondays. Needless to say, I welcomed this rainy Tuesday. I am getting some pretty darn cool stuff this week to review and I cant wait to share some new things with you. One of which I NEED! Guess you'll have to keep reading to see what I am talking about ;)

Did anyone try out the "donut" recipe? If you haven't tried it yet you should! It is so simple and packed with flavor!

This morning I thought instead of showing you what I have already showed you (last week I gave you the run down of my food for the week.) I thought that today called for a different kind of post! I have gotten so many questions recently about cravings. I have friends and clients that ask me all the time "why am I craving sugar? nuts? greasy foods?) Well my friends, I wish that it was as simple as your body actually wanting those things but I have to say, it's not. Your body would never "crave" a whopper with cheese...you do know that right? If you are in tune you can actually crack the code so to speak and find out what your body is really telling you. Sit back folks...this is going to be a long post. I wish that I could go into all the foods that our body's crave (if I did I would be writing a book) so I am just going to stick with the most common cravings.

Let's start with sugar:
Most people have a sweet tooth. As a matter of fact, humans are predisposed to like sweet things. Science has long known that there are sweet “receptors” on the tongue that practically guarantee that we are going to want a sweet treat every now and again.
And, many scientists agree that this predisposition was born of a need for nature to ensure that humans were drawn to the taste of nutritional necessities such as apples, oranges, bananas, and other naturally sweet, and vitamin packed, biologically indispensable foods.
But, a desire for a piece of chocolate after a meal or even for an apple as a mid-afternoon snack is not the same as craving sugar-laden foods. A craving is more than a desire; it’s a physical reaction to a physiological need.
The body craves what it feels it is missing. And, in the case of a sugar addiction, the body interprets a lack of sugar, and other high-carb foods, as an actual nutritional deficiency.
Yet, it’s what’s in those sugar-laden foods that the body really wants. It only associates the need for sugar as part of the usual method of getting those nutrients. For instance, at the core of every chocolate bar is the cacao bean. And cacao beans are loaded with magnesium.
So, when you crave a chocolate bar, your body actually wants more magnesium. Satisfy the body’s need for magnesium and you might eliminate those late-night cravings for chocolate.
The body craves other high-carb foods for the same reason. Once upon a time, carbs were less of a taste temptation, and more of a nutritional requirement. Whole grains were once the only way the body received certain nutritional components such as fiber, selenium, potassium and magnesium. Today’s food processing and decades of bad farming removes those nutrients.
Although food manufacturers often add vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients to their products you will never be able to take in all the vitamins and minerals you need from a standard diet; nutrients your body needs to function properly.
Essentially, modern farming and food processing methods, in addition to the way we eat, has practically guaranteed that you will forever have cravings and that these cravings will, more often than not, lead to overeating – and weight gain.
And, as a final cementing of what has become a vicious circle, our need for the nutrients our bodies have been designed to believe are in certain foods, makes us crave foods that are less and less nutritious, creating even stronger cravings!
If you want to turn off your
sugar cravings for good — before you go from irritable to violent — you will have to change your eating habits and enrich your diet with vitamins, minerals and other healthy, natural supplements.
And, the best way to get minerals back into your body is to eat plants grown in mineral-rich soil. Not only are the plants themselves loaded with natural sources of vitally important vitamins and minerals, growing food in nutrient rich soil promotes even healthier plants instead of leaching those nutrients from the plants.
So, the next time your body craves a Hershey bar, recognize the craving for what it is; your body’s signal that you are lacking what you need to maintain optimal health, and forgo the chocolate for foods that actually feed your body, not the craving.

Why do I crave salt?
Craving salt may be more than a salt addiction requiring treatment by your family doctor. For the salt addict, the more one sprinkles on, the more one wants. In turn too much salt may do the following:
- impact blood pressure
- create water retention
- be taxing on the body
If you find that you are a salt addict, try cutting back until you kick the habit. Opt for other seasonings over salt and discuss the use of salt substitutes with your doctor. As a note, salt substitutes may be dangerous for some individuals with heart disease and other medical conditions, so it is important to discuss the implementation of this product in your daily diet with your doctor before doing such.

Why do I crave fatty foods?
There is an emerging link between stress and people's desire to eat fatty foods. Often under pressure, people tend to reach for the fatty foods. There are two explanations for this:
1. At a psychological level the emotional comfort that fatty food has played in your life could drive you towards the chocolate bar on "bad hair" days. If, when crying as a child, you were comforted with fatty and sweet foods, then this nurture pattern may prevail.
2. At a biological level, under stress we tend to use our adrenal system or "fight or flight" chemistry. Fatty food stimulates dopamine and nor-adrenaline, both responsible for giving us the "rush" we need to cope with crisis.
To combat this we need to manage our stress levels better and practise pausing before reacting to stress triggers. Foods high in dietary fibre such as bran cereals and wholemeal breads are suggested as ideal tools for dampening this fat craving. The first step to controlling your emotional hunger is to identify whether you are hungering for food or simply emotional satisfaction. You can do this by keeping a food journal. Write down for one week what you eat, the time you eat and the amount and quality of the food you eat. As you write each entry, note down how you are feeling emotionally. Then review the week and identify when you ate food that related to how you felt emotionally at that time.

Why do I crave chocolate?
In addition to marijuana like substances, chocolate also contains tryptophan, an essential amino acid, which plays a role in the production of the neurotransmitter serotonin. Serotonin is a calming neurotransmitter that makes people feel relaxed and satisfied and is essential for a well-balanced mood. Many people eat chocolate to relieve anxiety, but is unlikely that tryptophan is solely responsible for chocolate cravings or a chocolate addiction because it can be obtained from other food sources, such as carbohydrates, as well.
Chocolate contains bioactive agents that increase the level of serotonin in the brain, prolong the effects of anandamide in the brain, produce mild stimulation, and signal the release of mesolimbic dopamine. However, few studies have invested the role of chocolate's bioactive agents as the basis of chocolate cravings. In a 1994 study men and women were given milk chocolate, white chocolate, which lacks cocoa and the bioactive agents found in chocolate, cocoa capsules, which lack the sensory components of chocolate, or placebo capsules. The researchers found that only milk chocolate fully satisfied the chocolate cravings of the subjects. In addition, both men and women preferred white chocolate to the cocoa capsules. This suggests that chocolate craving can be attributed to its aroma, texture, sweetness and psychological associations with chocolate.
Psychological associations with chocolate are influenced by a multitude of things, including hormonal and cultural influences. Women's bodies scream for chocolate when premenstrual food cravings surface once a month. Many researchers argue that women crave chocolate prior to menstruation because it contains high levels of magnesium. Women experience magnesium deficiency prior to menstruation. However, many other non-craved foods also contain high levels of magnesium. If that craving for chocolate sometimes feels like it is coming from deep in your gut, that is because maybe it is.A small study links the type of bacteria living in people's digestive system to a desire for chocolate. Everyone has a vast community of microbes in their guts. But people who crave daily chocolate show signs of having different colonies of bacteria than people who are immune to chocolate's allure. That may be the case for other foods, too. The idea could eventually lead to treating some types of obesity by changing the composition of the trillions of bacteria occupying the intestines and stomach, said Sunil Kochhar, co-author of the study. It appears Friday in the peer-reviewed Journal of Proteome Research.Kochhar is in charge of metabolism research at the Nestle Research Center in Lausanne, Switzerland. The food conglomerate Nestle SA paid for the study. But this is not part of an effort to convert a few to the dark side (or even milk) side of cocoa, Kocchar said.In fact, the study was delayed because it took a year for the researchers to find 11 men who do not eat chocolate.Kochhar compared the blood and urine of those 11 men, who he jokingly called "weird" for their indifference to chocolate, to 11 similar men who ate chocolate daily. They were all healthy, not obese, and were fed the same food for five days. The researchers examined the byproducts of metabolism in their blood and urine and found that a dozen substances were significantly different between the two groups. For example, the amino acid glycine was higher in chocolate lovers, while taurine (an active ingredient in energy drinks) was higher in people who did not eat chocolate. Also chocolate lovers had lower levels of the bad cholesterol, LDL.The levels of several of the specific substances that were different in the two groups are known to be linked to different types of bacteria, Kochhar said.Still to be determined is if the bacteria cause the craving, or if early in life people's diets changed the bacteria, which then reinforced food choices. How gut bacteria affect people is a hot field of scientific research.Past studies have shown that intestinal bacteria change when people lose weight, said Dr. Sam Klein, an obesity expert and professor of medicine at Washington University in St. Louis.Since bacteria interact with what you eat, it is logical to think that there is a connection between those microbes and desires for certain foods, said Klein, who was not part of Kochhar's study.Kochhar's research makes so much sense that people should have thought of it earlier, said J. Bruce German, professor of food chemistry at the University of California Davis. While five outside scientists thought the study was intriguing, Dr. Richard Bergman at the University of Southern California School of Medicine, had concerns about the accuracy of the initial division of the men into groups that wanted chocolate or were indifferent to it.What matters to Kochhar is where the research could lead.Kochhar said the relationship between food, people and what grows in their gut is important for the future: "If we understand the relationship, then we can find ways to nudge it in the right direction."

Last but certainly not least:

Why do I crave alcohol? Craving alcohol is a complicated process that involves several different factors. We are usually first introduced to alcohol at a young age (in our teens). Since no-one under the age of 21 (in the US) is allowed to purchase alcohol, it becomes “cool” and desirable for young adults under 21 to give drinking a try.
Later on people grab a bottle of booze to feel better, gain more confidence in a social setting or to forget about their problems. Since the alcohol makes them feel better, at least temporarily, they start to crave it.
Consuming alcohol on a regular basis also becomes a habit after a while, just like driving down a familiar road. If there is a problem, or a social setting that calls for alcohol, you may be grabbing that bottle of beer or glass of wine without even thinking about it.
Once you get in the habit of drinking alcohol on a more or less regular basis, your body gets used to the alcohol in the blood stream and reacts with withdrawal symptoms when you stop drinking. These withdrawal symptoms can range from mild to severe. Is Alcohol Really Dangerous Or Addictive?
Yes, alcohol can be extremely dangerous. One of the most common diseases associated with alcohol addiction is liver cirrhosis, which causes liver cells to die and the tissue to harden as a result of drinking. It is by no means the only danger to your health.
Drinking can also lead to heart disease, stroke, dementia and brain damage, cancer (including liver cancer, colon cancer and breast cancer in women).

What Can I Do To Curb My Alcohol Cravings?
If you just crave the occasional glass of wine or beer, make sure you are aware of the craving and make a conscious choice to have a glass, or skip it. Don’t let your cravings or emotions make the decision for you.
If you find yourself addicted to alcohol and are unable to not give in to the cravings, please seek professional help. Alcohol addiction is very serious and the earlier you seek treatment, the easier it will be to kick the habit and take control over your alcohol cravings.

I know that this post is packed with all kinds of info but I think that it could be useful information and if anything make you think twice next time you reach for a cookie when you are stressed out or "craving" something sweet. Think about it next time, feed your body, not the craving!

See you tomorrow! Get ready for some great reviews coming your way! I cant wait to share with you!

Donuts and pools.

I hope you all had a great weekend! Mine was filled with rain, relaxing and cooking! What better way to spend a weekend. I tell you what, I must have really needed a rest because I could have slept the whole weekend if I didn't have anything planned. I did make another wonderful batch of quinoa muffins and I also made some homemade raw donut wholes. If you remember Friday's post I received some raw donut holes from Pure Market express and well....I was addicted after the second one I ate. I had withdraws all weekend long and on Sunday I decided enough was enough! I made my version of the sweet treat and even though they are not as good, they will do. Wanna see my beauties?

Raw Coconut Date Truffles
Yields approx. 8
1 cup raw pecans3/4 cup (3.5 oz) sticky raisins (soak them to soften, if necessary)1/2 cup (3 oz) soft medjool dates, pitted4 T (1 oz) raw shredded coconut1/4 – 1/2 tsp cinnamon
Toss all ingredients into your food processor, and pulse until everything is incorporated. If you like little chunks left, make sure not to over-process. Roll into balls, place on a baking sheet, and stick in the freezer. Enjoy!

Yes, it is that easy and the great thing about these is that you can mix in whatever you pretty much want. I have a feeling that these little "do nuts" wont be around for long. :)

After cooking up a storm it was pool time for me! I was so very glad to get in a pool this weekend....even if it was raining. Yes, I went to the pool and it was poring. A girl has got to do what a girl has to do! Ever swam in the rain (of course I wouldn't if there was thunder or lightning). You should never get in a pool, river or pond for that matter if there is a storm or one brewing! ;)

I hate that this post is so short but I did at least give you a bangin recipe! Have no fears, I will be back and with REVIEWS! Yay!

Have a great day, go ahead, I dare you!

It was almost a year ago that I was able to sample from Pure Market Express. I actually celebrated my birthday with the amazing raw food company. I was so excited to get the chance to sample from them and boy my taste buds were even happier. I couldn't believe how good and fresh it really was! That cake I swear was the best thing I had ever eaten! I could have eaten 6 pieces right then.

Why Raw???
Live food makes you feel alive. Swallowing isn't the end of your food but the beginning. The road to heightened energy, mental acuity and overall health—never mind weight loss with effortless maintenance—begins when you embrace that gospel truth. What you feed your body literally feeds your life, your spirit, your everything. Raw, plant-based foods are full of life and vitality. The diet by definition features no meat, dairy, refined sugar or preservatives. That right there makes a difference. Nor is there, obviously, any cooked food. Raw foods' natural enzymes, vitamins, minerals and amino acids remain unzapped by cooking's high temperatures, AND SO DELIVER maximum... nutritional and digestive punch. As you age, your body's natural storehouse of digestive enzymes depletes. Cooked foods, lacking as they are in the enzyme department, chew through even more. Raw foods are packed with live enzymes, making them digestive magic bullets. And three times a day you get to choose the magic or malaise. I want you to meet the woman behind the raw kindness you get at Pure Market Express. I was so impressed to see that Rebecca was actually the one that contacted me! I love hearing straight from the source!

Meet Rebecca
Her family calls her "Rawbecca." So goes her story.Life is full of ironies, and Pure Market Express co-founder and executive chef Rebecca Irey being born and raised on a 3,000-acre cattle ranch is one of them. "I can't remember once having a green salad growing up," she says. "Dinner was meatloaf, hamburgers, steak, goulash—always with boiled potatoes and white bread and butter."The ironies continue: "I still don't like vegetables," says Rebecca (likely the first raw chef to ever concede such). Yet hers is the appetite that was won over by the life-giving, energy-boosting, weight-melting, soul-satisfying wonders of eating raw.A taco salad at Ecopolitan, a Minneapolis raw restaurant, triggered Rebecca's conversion. "It had sour cream and cheese—mock, of course—and I thought, 'If this is what raw food is like, okay!'" She became an Ecopolitan regular, trying, with gusto, everything on the menu and taking every class the restaurant offered. Then she headed to New Hampshire to train with and get her certification from internationally acclaimed raw author and educator Alissa Cohen.Thousands of recipe trials later (her husband and six children are ready repositories for her kitchen experiments), she and her husband launched Pure Market Express as a way to spread, like so much hummus on dehydrator onion bread, the goodness of eating raw. Something else that Rebecca has also made possible:

I was elated to see that this baby was in my box! I recieved two very super sweet items in the mail.

A skinny wedge of this, their signature dessert, does more for the raw foods movement than any treatise on healthful eating. So staggeringly rich, so unerringly smooth, so unapologetically chocolate, it’s really a truffle atop a nutty crust. Prepare to fall in love. This was the slice of cake that I celebrated my 28th birthday with and I want you to celebrate with me this year with your own slice. This can be frozen if you want to keep it for a special day! I am telling you to-die-for!

Everything from "Mac n Cheese" to donut holes, Pure Market Express makes it healthy, raw and delivers straight to your door. What more could you ask for? I love the company from the fast delivery to outstanding customer service! Thanks Rebecca for being so great and letting me try some new products! You guys rock!

WAIT!!! Did I just say "donut holes?"

Why yes I did! This is the other item that I recieved! At first I was taken back by how only two of them had almost 200 cals. Then I thought "well, one of them has just under 100 cals". For some reason that made me feel better. When I saw the ingrediants, I felt awesome about eating them.

This is all that they have in them!
brazil nut pulp, maple syrup, coconut oil, sucanat, cinnamon, nutmeg, sea salt

So much that I ate 6 of them when I opened them. I kept going back and getting one out of the fridge. Before I knew it...they were gone :(

I loved every bite! Raw or not. I kid you not. Best donut of my life. I am being serious folks, these were amazing. I bit into it and my eyes widened! It was more than perfect with my cup of coffee. The perfect pair.

Swallowing isn't the end of your food but the beginning. The road to heightened energy, mental acuity and overall health—never mind weight loss with effortless maintenance—begins when you embrace that gospel truth. What you feed your body literally feeds your life, your spirit, your everything.

Alright folks, get your orders placed!
